Retractable Technologies (RTI), has been pioneering innovative medical device manufacturing in Little Elm, Texas for 30  years. In a significant milestone, the BioNTX Facilities Advisory Committee joined hands with the city of Little Elm to host an exclusive site tour of RTI's manufacturing facility.

 

Celebrating this remarkable 30-year legacy, the event not only showcased RTI's cutting-edge technology but also highlighted the vibrant future of our life science community. Following the tour, attendees were graciously hosted by the Little Elm Economic Development Corporation for an afternoon happy hour at the chic Elm Hotel.

These events are a testament to the enduring partnership between industry leaders, local authorities,

and our community; laying the foundation for continued collaboration and prosperity in North Texas. 

BioWorks for North Texas Graduates Inaugural Biotechnology Workforce Training Cohort at Collin College

The BioWorks for North Texas proudly announced the graduation of 40 (forty) Collin College students with entry-level certifications in biotechnology.  The group is the first cohort to emerge from a regional biotechnology and healthcare workforce training initiative that tapped four, college-university partners in North Texas to collaboratively develop program curricula in alignment with expressed industry needs. A second cohort of students are actively enrolled at Collin College, with several additional training pathways slated to launch in summer 2024 at partner institutions Dallas College, UT Arlington, and Tarrant County College. 

 

The BioWorks for North Texas training comes at a crucial time as the region faces a demand for thousands of biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and healthcare workers. BioNTX celebrates this landmark initiative, as it not only provides students with essential skills but also serves as a vital resource for the local community, bridging the gap between education and employment in the emerging fields of biotechnology and healthcare.

Founded in 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts, MassChallenge’s mission is to equip bold entrepreneurs to disrupt the status quo and create meaningful change. Exploring the Human Element in Chronic Pain: UNT HSC Publishes PRECISION Study Findings in JAMA

The latest article in JAMA Network Open, titled "Physician Empathy and Chronic Pain Outcomes," explores data from the Pain Registry for Epidemiological, Clinical, and Interventional Studies and Innovation (PRECISION) at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. Led by John C. Licciardone, DO, MS, MBA, Director of PRECISION, the study, conducted in collaboration with students from HSC’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, including Yen Tran, Khang Ngo, David Toledo, and Navya Peddireddy, alongside Subhash Aryal, PhD, a registry biostatistician affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, examines 1,470 adults with chronic low-back pain. Their findings underscore a significant correlation between patient outcomes and physician empathy levels, emphasizing the pivotal role of empathy in chronic pain management.

UTD Energy Research Leads Offshore Wind Turbines

The Wind Energy Center at The University of Texas at Dallas is leading a project to improve safety for deep-water divers maintaining offshore wind turbines. With $500,000 in funding from a $2.7 million federal effort by the Ocean Energy Safety Institute, the project focuses on developing remote-monitoring technologies to mitigate risks faced by divers. By creating digital twins of wind turbines and analyzing simulation data, the project aims to detect equipment issues early, ensuring the safety and efficiency of offshore wind farm operations.

UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers, led by Lukasz Joachimiak, Ph.D., have made a breakthrough in understanding neurodegenerative diseases. Their study in Structure reveals how oligomeric chaperones, especially DNAJB8, suppress misshaped protein formation linked to conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. This discovery, supported by UTSW’s Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute, offers potential for targeted diagnostic and therapeutic strategies against these diseases.

TechFW Brings North Texas into Space Alliance as State Looks to Innovate the Final Frontier

TechFW and the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership have issued a call for startups and companies to engage with the Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP).

 

The SATOP is a state-funded Texas program administered by the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership that provides free technical assistance to small businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs located in Texas. SATOP offers technical assistance through two programs:  

  • The 40 Hour Technical Assistance Program
  • The Texas A&M Capstone Design Program

A consortium of Space Alliance Partners is the driving force behind the Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP). Aerospace companies, universities, colleges, and the NASA Johnson Space Center have committed to provide free labor hours to assist small business owners in solving technical challenges.

Chiesi Rare Disease Golden Ticket Competition

The Chiesi Golden Ticket Competition awards startups and companies 2 (two) Golden Tickets to a US BioLabs site. Each Golden Ticket provides one year of fully paid individual bench space and membership at a fully equipped laboratory designed to accelerate early-stage startup working on research and development in the gene editing and/or relevant viral and non-viral delivery technologies, for treating rare hematology, immunology, ophthalmology, dermatology, inborn errors of metabolism or metabolic diseases.
