AstraZeneca announced positive Phase III SAFFRON trial results showing that TAGRISSO (osimertinib) plus savolitinib produced statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in both progression-free survival and overall survival compared with platinum-based chemotherapy in patients with MET-driven, EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer whose disease progressed after TAGRISSO. The results make SAFFRON the first global Phase III trial to demonstrate significant benefits in both progression-free and overall survival for this treatment setting, addressing a major mechanism of resistance to EGFR-targeted therapy. AstraZeneca said the findings further support TAGRISSO as a backbone therapy for EGFR-mutated lung cancer and will be submitted for presentation at a forthcoming medical meeting and to regulatory authorities.
