Colossal Biosciences Targets Bluebuck De-Extinction to Restore Lost Species and Protect Endangered Antelope
Colossal Biosciences announced plans to revive the extinct bluebuck, a South African antelope hunted to extinction around 1800, as part of its expanding de-extinction portfolio. The project uses advanced genome editing by modifying DNA from the bluebuck’s closest living relative, the roan antelope, with the goal of creating a functional proxy species. Beyond reviving a lost animal, the effort is intended to develop new conservation technologies that could help protect endangered antelope populations and broader ecosystems.
