Colossal Creates First Dire Wolf Pups Using Ancient DNA

Colossal Biosciences has announced the birth of three dire wolf pups, engineered using ancient DNA, cloning, and gene-editing techniques. By modifying the genes of the gray wolf, its closest living relative, scientists created a hybrid that closely resembles the extinct dire wolf.

“Our team took DNA from a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull and made healthy dire wolf puppies,” said CEO Ben Lamm. “This milestone proves our de-extinction technology works.”

Best known for efforts to revive the mammoth, dodo, and Tasmanian tiger, Colossal revealed this as its first public success with dire wolves.
