Renowned Italian Geneticist Named 2025 Recipient of Prestigious Autophagy Prize from UTSW
The University of Naples Federico II UT Southwestern Medical Center has announced that Dr. Andrea Ballabio, a globally acclaimed Italian medical geneticist, will receive the 2025 Beth Levine, M.D. Prize in Autophagy Research. Dr. Ballabio is being recognized for his groundbreaking work uncovering the molecular mechanisms of genetic diseases. The biennial $20,000 award and accompanying lecture honor the legacy of the late Dr. Beth Levine, a pioneer in the field and former Director of UT Southwestern’s Center for Autophagy Research. The prize celebrates leading scientists whose work has significantly advanced the understanding of autophagy—a vital cellular process that enables cells to recycle proteins, organelles, and other components to maintain health and function.
