UNTHSC Researchers use 3D Printing to Treat Keratoconus

UNTHSC researchers, Drs. Dimitrios Karamichos and Jayoung Kim, are using 3D bioprinting to address, keratoconus. Keratoconus is a condition that causes the cornea to thin and bulge, leading to severe complications, such as blindness.  Kim and Karamichos are using bioprinting to develop personalized devices that can be worn on the eye during corneal cross-linking- which uses special eye drops and light to "stiffen" the cornea.

They have partnered with HSC software engineers who specialize in bioprinting. The team is currently collecting preliminary data to submit an application for federal funding.
