UT Dallas Researchers Explore AI’s Role in Enhancing Breast Cancer Detection
As breast cancer rates—especially among younger women—continue to rise, the number of radiologists in the U.S. is declining, creating challenges for timely and accurate mammogram readings. To explore a potential solution, Drs. Mehmet Ayvaci and Radha Mookerjee, information systems professors at UT Dallas’ Naveen Jindal School of Management, studied whether artificial intelligence (AI) could help bridge the gap. Published in Nature Communications, their research found that AI could significantly reduce healthcare costs—by up to 30%—by quickly flagging high-risk cases for radiologists to review. Still, the researchers emphasize that AI should support—not replace—human expertise, as radiologists remain more accurate in diagnosis.
