A phase 2 clinical trial at UT Southwestern Medical Center found that targeted radiation followed by surgery may improve outcomes for patients with advanced kidney cancer that has spread into a major vein. Among the 23 patients studied, 71.4% remained cancer recurrence free one year after treatment. Researchers are planning a national trial to determine whether the approach can reduce surgical risks and expand treatment options.
