UTA Award-Winning Stem Cell Research Speeds Discovery

UTA researchers earned the 2025 Journal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics Best Paper Award for developing a simulation technique that dramatically reduces the time needed to model how stem cells develop into specific cell types. The NIH-funded team, led by mechanical engineering professor Alan Bowling with bioengineering professor Michael Cho and mechanical engineering professor Hyejin Moon, reduced simulation time from months or years to approximately one hour and nine minutes. The technology could accelerate research in stem cell differentiation, tissue repair, regeneration, and wound healing by helping scientists identify which stem cells are most likely to develop into desired cell types before conducting costly laboratory experiments.
