UTA Research Targets Drug-Resistant Bacteria With More Than $4.6 Million in Federal Grants

UTA biology professor Qing Tang received two federal grants totaling more than $4.6 million to investigate how dangerous bacteria respond to stress, survive antibiotic treatment, and interact with the human body during infection. The awards include a five-year, $2.05 million National Institute of General Medical Sciences grant studying bacterial stress responses and a five-year, $2.65 million National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases grant examining how bacteria influence host metabolism and immunity. The research focuses on pathogens including Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus and could help identify new drug targets and treatment strategies as antibiotic-resistant infections become increasingly difficult to treat.
