The University of Texas at Arlington is launching an innovative disease-anchored Ph.D. program that trains doctoral students to become experts in a single rare disease while integrating research, clinical care, diagnostics, and therapeutic development. Developed in collaboration with Cook Children’s Health Care System and led by Professor Dennis Lal, the program partners with patient advocacy organizations to align graduate training with real-world patient needs and accelerate translational research. The new track, housed in UTA’s College of Science, aims to create a scalable model for rare disease research by connecting academia, healthcare providers, industry, and patient communities.
