Madigan Blake and Isaac Rangel-Landeros, Earth sciences students at the University of Texas at Dallas, have been selected for the prestigious National Science Foundation’s (NSF) 2024 Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). This competitive fellowship provides stipends and tuition support for graduate students pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Their success reflects the exceptional quality of students in UT Dallas’ sustainable Earth systems sciences (SESS) department. Dr. David Lumley, SESS department head, highlighted that SESS outperformed academic colleagues from UT Austin and Stanford University in this NSF GRFP round. Additionally, both Blake and Rangel-Landeros are Eugene McDermott Graduate Fellows, receiving an endowment that includes discretionary research funding and a stipend. Blake’s research focuses on lithium enrichment mechanisms in brines in the Alberta Basin, while Rangel-Landeros aims to contribute to the clean energy transition.
