Welch Foundation Funds UTA’S Innovations in Drug Delivery

Dr. Junha Jeon, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, UT Arlington

The Welch Foundation has granted $300,000 to support University of Texas at Arlington research aimed at developing new materials for safe and effective medication delivery, particularly for diseases like cancer.

"As one of the nation’s largest private funders of chemical research, we are dedicated to advancing science in ways that positively impact lives," said Adam Kuspa, president of the foundation. "Effective treatment of diseases relies on delivering medications to targeted body areas. Dr. Junha Jeon's research holds promise for enhancing drug production and improving outcomes."

Dr. Junha Jeon, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UTA, leads the investigation into "arynes," chemical compounds derived from benzene by removing two hydrogen atoms. While aryne compounds have been known for over a century, their recent discovery as effective carriers for antibiotics and anti-tumor drugs is groundbreaking.
