Osteal Therapeutics announces it has closed a $50 M, Series D funding round led by Zimmer Biomet, with support from Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JJDC, Inc., Gideon Strategic Partners, and HM Capital. The funds will propel the development of VT-X7, a therapy for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) towards FDA submission and commercialization.  Backed by positive results from APEX and APEX-2 trials, Osteal has received Breakthrough Therapy and Fast Track status, reflecting its potential to address a critical medical need.

Good Days Prioritizes Rare Disease Patients with Financial Support

Good Days has announced a partnership with the Sumaira Foundation to extend financial aid and support to individuals with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) across the United States. Good Days has disbursed over two million grants and $3 billion in assistance since its inception in 2003, offering various programs such as premium, copayment, and travel assistance. The collaboration facilitates NMOSD patients in initiating and sustaining their treatment journey, while Clorinda Walley, President of Good Days, underscores how it enables patients and their families to prioritize their health without being hindered by financial obstacles.

Good Days swiftly offers financial aid to Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum disorder (NMOSD) patients unable to afford urgently needed treatment. Patients must have a diagnosed covered disease, valid Social Security number, and receive treatment in the US. They should seek assistance for an FDA-approved medication and have medical insurance covering at least 50% of treatment costs, excluding the deductible.

Dr. Wang, who also holds the Jenkins Garrett Endowed Professorship of Statistics and Data Science, has been instrumental in the development of UTA's data science program, including the launch of its first graduate degree in data science. UTD Students' NASA-Backed AI Solution

Takes Flight to Johnson Space Center

A team of students from the University of Texas at Dallas is preparing to present their cutting-edge AI solution for water object detection at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. The team's project is part of NASA's Micro-g Neutral Buoyancy Experiment Design Teams (Micro-g NExT) program, which offers undergraduate students the opportunity to design, build, and test a device that addresses a NASA exploration challenge.

 

Under the mentorship of a NASA expert, the UTD research team has been diligently developing their prototype, a process that has equipped them with critical skills in software development and project management. Their AI solution is poised to make significant contributions to NASA's missions by improving the detection and identification of objects in aquatic environments, which is essential for various space and planetary explorations.

AI-Based Speech Analysis Tool Shows Promise in

Detecting Cognitive Impairment and Dementia

C. Munro Cullum, Ph.D., Professor of Psychiatry, Neurological Surgery, and Neurology, and Vice Chair and Chief of the Division of Psychology at UT Southwestern

UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers, led by C. Munro Cullum, Ph.D., have developed an AI-based speech analysis tool that successfully identifies mild cognitive impairment and dementia in Spanish-speaking individuals. Published in Frontiers in Neurology, the study highlights the potential of this algorithm as an early screening tool for dementia risk.

 

Using data from 195 Spanish-speaking participants from a multicenter clinical trial in Spain, the AI was trained on language tasks collected via the AcceXible platform. The findings emphasize the effectiveness of machine learning tools in rapidly screening for cognitive impairment, particularly in large-scale studies, and suggest promising applications for future cognitive screening and early intervention efforts.
