Nanoscope Sets New Benchmark with

Historic FDA Submission for Vision-Restoring Therapy

Nanoscope Therapeutics is advancing new hope for patients with severe vision loss, initiating its rolling Biologics License Application (BLA) submission to the FDA for MCO-010, the company’s groundbreaking gene-agnostic therapy for retinitis pigmentosa (RP), this is a life-changing breakthrough for those with limited or no treatment options today.
 
RP is a complex degenerative eye disease driven by more than 100 known genetic mutations, but Nanoscope’s approach bypasses more than genetic barriers.
 
This marks a major leap forward not only for RP patients, but for the broader fields of gene therapy and regenerative medicine. With fast-track designation and eligibility for priority review, the submission is on track for completion by early 2026. 

Lantern Pharma Uses AI to

Fast-Track Cancer Combination Treatments

Lantern Pharma has launched an AI-powered module within its RADR® platform to predict the effectiveness of cancer drug combinations involving DNA-damaging agents (DDAs) and DNA damage response inhibitors (DDRis). Based on data from 221 clinical trials, the module supports faster, more precise development of targeted therapies. It has already guided an FDA-cleared Phase 1B/2 trial in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), combining LP-184 with olaparib, and represents a key step forward as the cancer combination therapy market nears $50 billion by 2030.

Vascular Company Finds New Home in North Texas

One in three Americans over 45 suffers from vein disease, and treatment often involves bulky machines tethered to walls. Koya Medical changed that with the first portable solution—and now, they are bringing that innovation to North Texas.

 

Last month, the company relocated from California to Dallas, growing into a 35,000 square foot facility. Koya plans to hire 300–400 people across billing, engineering, supply chain, and HR. They’re not starting from zero: 20+ employees and their families have already made the move alongside CEO Andy Doraiswamy.

Alloy Therapeutics Future Founder Fellowship

Launches in North Texas in Fall 2025

The Alloy Future Founder Fellowship will bring world-class faculty, speakers, and a global curriculum to DFW, spotlighting the region as a rising biotech hub. By engaging top scientific and venture leaders, the program plans to bolster North Texas's visibility among investors, founders, and institutions

 

Alloy Future Founder Fellows will lead two Biotech Startup Academy cohorts: Fall 2025 (October 2 - November 14) and Spring 2026 (TBD). 

 

Each 7-week hybrid program will host a dynamic mix of researchers, faculty, students, postdocs, and industry professionals exploring or launching life science ventures.

National Symposium Inspires Action at ARPA-H Hub

The National Luncheon Symposium, hosted by Good Days at the ARPA-H Hub in Dallas, brought together biotech leaders, innovators, and patient advocates for an inspiring conversation on the future of chronic disease care.

 

Each year, seven of the top 10 causes of death in the U.S. are due to chronic illness. That’s why Good Days leads the National Chronic Disease Day campaign every July 10. Chronic Disease Day unites patients, healthcare leaders, nonprofits, policymakers, and communities to raise awareness, expand access to care, and promote healthier lives.

 

Good Days, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has been a lifeline for patients since 2003. The organization provides financial assistance for medications, transportation, lodging, and other costs associated with life-altering chronic conditions. With over 2 million grants awarded and more than $3 billion in financial assistance delivered, Good Days is a national leader in access to care.

 

The symposium served as a powerful reminder of the impact that collaboration and compassion can have in shaping a more accessible and innovative healthcare landscape.

Robyn Remotigue, MPPA, CRA

Robyn Remotigue, Executive Director of Research and Scholarship at UNTHSC’s College of Nursing, completed the 2025 NCURA Global Senior Level Fellowship at King’s College London. One of only 10 recipients worldwide, the fellowship fosters international collaboration in research administration.

UTD Launches New Master’s Program

in AI for Biomedical Sciences

The University of Texas at Dallas is launching a new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence for Biomedical Sciences this fall, along with a related graduate certificate program. Approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the program is one of the first in the state to focus specifically on AI applications in biomedical science.

 

The new degree and certificate aim to meet growing workforce demands in data-driven health and medical fields, offering training that ranges from foundational programming to advanced AI applications in human health. 

UTSW Awards 2025 Beth Levine Prize to Dr. Andrea Ballabio

Andrea Ballabio, MD

UT Southwestern Medical Center has named Italian medical geneticist Andrea Ballabio, M.D., as the recipient of the 2025 Beth Levine, M.D. Prize in Autophagy Research.

 

The prize honors outstanding contributions to the field of autophagy and commemorates the legacy of the late Dr. Beth Levine, a leader in autophagy research.

 

Dr. Ballabio is internationally recognized for his work on lysosomes, the cellular structures responsible for waste processing and regulation of metabolism. His research has shed light on the molecular mechanisms underlying genetic diseases and contributed significantly to the field of cell biology.

This award supports high-risk, high-reward ideas that are conceptually innovative and could lead to groundbreaking discoveries or new research directions that significantly improve outcomes for individuals living with DMD.

DARPA CoasterChase

Application due August 28 2025

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative proposals that leverage a novel understanding of the enteric nervous system as well as emerging neuromodulation technologies to selectively target neurons in the small intestine and alter the body’s stress response. The CoasterChase program aims to develop a multimodal, ingestible, sensing and stimulation platform for use in monitoring and modulating biomarkers of acute stress from within the small intestine. Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in enteric neuromodulation and sensing, ingestible electronics, and modulation of the stress response. Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.

NIH Director’s Pioneer Award Program

The NIH Director’s Pioneer Award supports individual scientists of exceptional creativity who propose bold and highly innovative research projects with the potential to produce a major impact on broad, important areas relevant to the mission of NIH. To be considered pioneering, the proposed research must reflect substantially different scientific directions from those already being pursued in the investigator’s research program or elsewhere. Applications in all topics relevant to the broad mission of NIH are welcome, including, but not limited to, topics in the behavioral, social, biomedical, applied, and formal sciences and topics that may involve basic, translational, or clinical research. The NIH Director’s Pioneer Award is a component of the High-Risk, High-Reward Research (HRHR) Program of the NIH Common Fund.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) intends to issue a PCORI Funding Announcement (PFA) on August 12, 2025, seeking to fund high-quality, patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) studies that focus on rare diseases. This preannouncement provides potential applicants additional time to identify collaborators; obtain patient and stakeholder input on potential studies; and develop responsive, high-quality proposals. 

BARDA VITAL Hub - DEV Awards

Application due September 26, 2025

The VITAL Hub seeks proposals for the development of innovative therapeutics solutions in alignment with BARDA’s mission to promote health security. Multi-use/platform technologies are preferred for this solicitation. Funding through this program can be used to demonstrate:

Proof-of-concept for a BARDA-relevant use case for an existing platform technology
Proof-of-concept for high-risk breakthrough technologies
Advancement of technologies currently in development to the next value inflection points

Propionic Acidemia Foundation 

Application closes October 1, 2025

PAF is a non-profit organization whose primary mission is to help advance research devoted to finding treatments and a cure for propionic acidemia.  By funding research, we aim to accelerate new knowledge, discovery, development and/or evaluation of therapeutics leading to better treatment and a cure for all individuals affected by PA.

Fueling the Next Generation of Health Innovators

The One Health Incubator is a dynamic partnership between the Innovation Hub and the Health Sciences Center, created to support researchers and technology startups in the life sciences sector. NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions 

Program ends January 8, 2027

The purpose of this Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions is to support small scale research grants at institutions that do not receive substantial funding from the NIH, with an emphasis on providing biomedical research experiences primarily for undergraduate students, and enhancing the research environment at applicant institutions.
