UTSW Research Suggests Fracture Risk Tool Can
Guide Parathyroid Surgery
|
UT Southwestern researchers found that the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) may help identify patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who could benefit from parathyroidectomy. FRAX scores predicted fracture risk even without bone density data and could support more personalized treatment decisions for patients.
Analyzing nearly 60,000 adults with PHPT, researchers found that FRAX scores reliably predicted which patients would gain fracture protection from surgery, even when bone density data were unavailable. The findings also highlight that some patients who do not meet current surgical guidelines may still face elevated fracture risk, underscoring FRAX’s potential to support more personalized treatment decisions.
